Background: Maternal outcome data captured in the delivery register has never been comprehensively analyzed to identify problem areas or establish trends in maternal health outcomes at Kadoma General Hospital (KGH). Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe requested the district to analyze the data and identify problems because some pregnant women in the district had claimed that it is “safer to deliver at home than at KGH”.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted based on secondary data set analysis. Proportions and means were generated and compared using the Chi Square test at 5% level of significance.
Results: The median age for mothers who delivered at KGH was 24 years (Q1=20; Q3=28). The median gestational age was 40 weeks and the median blood loss was 150mls. Proportion of women from the rural areas who delivered at KGH increased from 8% in 2007 to 18% in 2011 (p<0.001). Deliveries by booked mothers were 86% in 2007 and 2008, and it decreased to 77% in 2011 (p<0.001). Deliveries by unbooked mothers increased from 14% in 2007 to 23% in 2011 (p<0.001). Commonest abnormality on admission was pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). PIH increased from 23% in 2007 to 37% in 2011. Deliveries with an intact perineum increased from 63% in 2007 to 80% in 2011 (p<0.001). Fresh still births halved from 1.5% in 2007 to 0.8% in 2011 (p=0.029).
Conclusion: Deliveries have significantly increased from 2007 to 2011. Unbooked deliveries’ increasing; PIH is the common abnormality on admission. Macerated still births doubled from 2007 to 2011.
